Week One-Truthfilled by Ruth Chou Simons-The Practice of Preaching to Yourself Through Every Season

Introduction

This week I started the Bible study Truthfilled by Ruth Chou Simons with my amazing bible study partners.

Do you have a bible study partner?*Do you belong to a bible study group? If you don’t and would like one, please reach out. I would love to get you connected to one.

Truthfilled is a study on the book of Colossians where Paul writes a letter to the Colossians regarding dangerous teachings threatening the church of Colossae.

Colossians are hearing things being said by nonbelievers that causing doubt of all they have learned about who Jesus is.

Life Runs in Season’s

We see Ruth use the seasons of the year to correlate with the seasons of our lives.

Winter-Resting in Gods Character

Spring-Rehearsing the Truth

Summer-Responding in Faith

Fall-Remember God’s Provisions

Ruth shared how Paul David Tripp says, “no one is more influential in your life than you are because no one talks to you more than you do.” Is that not the truth or what?

I can’t tell you how many ‘secrets’ conversations I have had in my mind with myself. I mean, what’s the harm? No one can hear what I am saying, right? Well, my friends, I can tell you it hurts, and it affects many people.

We have an instinctual urge to tell ourselves just how lacking we think we are. “I don’t know why I started to write. No one wants to read what I have to say. Maybe people will think I am a terrible writer. Who is going to listen to my thoughts? It’s not like I’m smart.”

We must be cautious with filling our heads because it can pull us away from what we believe is true. We talk to ourselves so much we start to believe it. When we start to believe it, we start to live it. When we start to live it, people start to notice it. That is how it can really hurt the people we care about.

This study will teach us about the character of God, how we can believe that what he says about himself is true. That we can rest in His character and know that what He says we are is also true.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. -Proverbs 23:7 NKJV

Ruth shows us how Paul wanted the believers to follow and serve Jesus fearlessly. He knew they would have to know the truth of who God is, who they were in Him.

We need to have it ingrained in our souls and not be led astray by what others say.

Some of the verses we explored in week one are listed below.

There is a wealth of wisdom and knowledge in Psalm 42, and I strongly recommend you read the entire passage. Take a peek at verses 5-11

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon from Mount Mizar. Deep calls to at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me. By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. I say to God, my rock: “Why have you forgotten me?” “Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” As with a deadly wound in my bones my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God” Why are you cast dow, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
Psalm 42:5-11 ES
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Gos’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” Romans 12:2 NIV
So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, “fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, Colossians 1:10-11 ESV
If you have been raised with Christ, Seek the things that are about, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. Colossians 3:1-2 ESV
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of out inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:11-14
To an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and undying, kept in heaven for you, 1 Peter 1:4
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits Psalm 103:2
